SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - South Bend's west side has been facing a wide range of challenges lately.
On Wednesday night, city officials held a meeting to brief residents on what has become known as the Western Avenue Transformation District.
Joined by the Housing Authority of South Bend, officials outlined plans for the first phase of the project.
The first phase of the Western Avenue Transformation District would see the former Rabbi Shulman and Monroe Circle block redeveloped into a vibrant, mixed-income neighborhood.
"We got a fully scoped Phase 1 of 208 units, and we're working to make sure it aligns with the community's priorities from the community's standpoint, but we will be moving forward toward construction here as soon as we possibly can," says Caleb Bauer, director of community investment for City of South Bend.
"We're really excited about this development the way it ties into the city's planning for the south end of downtown. The way it really creates a new neighborhood," adds Steve Luecke, vice chair of the South Bend Housing Authority. "So, we're not just concentrating on people, we're really bringing in a mixture of incomes, a mixture of backgrounds and other things, and we think it's going to be a very lively affordable and great addition to our city."
City officials weren't the only people talking on Wednesday night.
